African Countries Begin Repatriation of Citizens from South Africa

(MENAFN) Several African nations have started repatriating their citizens from South Africa amid growing safety concerns, according to reports.

The move follows increased activity by an anti-illegal immigration group that has been operating in multiple South African cities and issued a deadline of June 30 for undocumented migrants to leave the country.

In response to the escalating tensions, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation, confirming that immigration enforcement agencies—including the Department of Home Affairs, the Border Management Authority, and the South African Police Service—will intensify efforts to identify and deport individuals residing illegally in the country.

Ramaphosa said illegal immigration is not the root cause of South Africa’s broader challenges and emphasized that migration is a global issue, not unique to the country. He also stressed that all residents must be in the country legally, whether for work or business purposes.

He further criticized individuals and groups attempting to enforce immigration rules outside of official legal channels, warning against vigilantism, according to reports.

Following the unrest and heightened tensions, several countries have acted on concerns raised by their nationals and begun arranging voluntary returns from South Africa as the situation develops, according to reports.
