Mozambique Reports Citizens Killed in South Africa Xenophobic Violence
According to reports, the Mozambican government said Tuesday that around 800 of its citizens were caught up in the violence that erupted on Friday, prompting hundreds to flee the area.
Approximately 300 individuals reportedly returned to Mozambique on Saturday.
The government statement said that seven Mozambican nationals died in total, with five of the deaths attributed directly to the violence, while two others were killed in a road accident while traveling back to Mozambique in a private vehicle.
As stated by reports, the remaining approximately 500 Mozambican citizens were placed in a secure location in South Africa’s Western Cape Province and were expected to be repatriated.
The unrest is linked to ongoing protests in South Africa against undocumented migration, which have contributed to rising tensions in several areas.
Reports indicate that South Africa has experienced repeated waves of xenophobic violence since 2008, with the latest escalation occurring amid broader political tensions ahead of upcoming local government elections in November.
Officials in Mozambique have called for the protection of their citizens and continued coordination with South African authorities to ensure safe repatriation.
