S. Africa leader criticizes both domestic, international “bullies”
Ramaphosa opened his speech by marking the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution, which he described as one of the world’s most progressive. However, he noted that this milestone comes amid “increasingly strident attacks” on constitutional values, the rule of law, and the rule-based international order.
“Across the world, the values of democracy, equality, equity, inclusion, human solidarity, gender equality and social justice are under attack,” Ramaphosa said. He emphasized that while the majority of South Africans—and people globally—support freedom, equality, non-racialism, non-sexism, and human solidarity, a vocal minority within the country is aligning with this global assault and spreading misinformation.
Though he did not name any specific organizations, his remarks appeared directed at local movements accused of engaging with international conservative networks and media outlets to challenge South Africa’s democratic principles.
